Adult Mentor Program

Mentors are a vital part of the caring community that surrounds our boys. San Miguel’s Mentoring Program pairs students with adults of all ages and backgrounds (ranging from 24 to 80) to build supportive relationships over a weekly lunch.

Mentors visit once a week to share a meal, play a board game, or simply talk for 50 minutes—time that students often say flies by. The role is simple but powerful: to listen, encourage, and build trust. Academic support is not required, and is actually discouraged—that’s our job!

All mentors complete a background check and orientation before being paired with a student. A one-year commitment is requested, though many mentors stay connected with their student for all four years.

Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Mentor?

  • Be available (mentors come to school once a week from 12:05 to 12:55pm)

  • Be inquisitive

  • Be compassionate

  • Be reliable—our students rely on their mentor to come every week and greatly look forward to them coming. Our students would much rather sit with their mentor than go to lunch and recess with their friends!

  • Be empathetic

  • Be honest and genuine

  • Be self-reflective

Statistics Show That With a Good Mentor Students Are:

  • 55% more like to enroll in college

  • 90% are interested in becoming a mentor themselves

  • 78% are more likely to volunteer and give back to their community

  • Are more like to hold a leadership position
