San Miguel VOYAGE program sets sail

The San Miguel School has embarked on a new journey this school year with the kick-off of the VOYAGE program, an after-school program held two days a week.

The new program seeks to offer Valuable Opportunities for Youth Advancement, Growth, and Enrichment (VOYAGE), providing individualized help based on each student's needs. A total of 48 San Miguel students are participating in VOYAGE for the first trimester.

VOYAGE students are invited to participate in one of five specified labs: Math Lab, Language Arts Lab, Study Skills Lab, Reading Lab, or Study Hall. San Miguel teachers and staff members are joined by volunteers from Providence College in offering homework assistance and enrichment activities aimed at advancing the students' overall skills and ability. San Miguel has also partnered with the Dunn Institute to provide Title I programs and teachers for the students selected for the Reading Lab.

The VOYAGE program seeks to enable the success of each student by providing one-on-one attention in the area where he would most benefit from extra help or improvement. In an effort to provide students will other unique enrichment opportunities, San Miguel plans to offer other labs and activities during the second and third trimesters. Possible additions include a Cooking Lab or a Bird-Watching Lab, to be offered as a reward to students in good academic standing.
