San Miguel celebrates the season with Providence Rotary

The students and staff of The San Miguel School were guests of the Providence Rotary at a special luncheon held on December 14.

The Rotarians welcomed San Miguel and Sophia Academy to the annual event, which featured a performance by the San Miguel School Chorus as well as student speakers from the two schools. Additional holiday cheer came from another special guest--Santa Claus--who brought gifts for the students and Christmas joy to the celebration!

Thank you to the Providence Rotary for hosting the event again this year and for their generous support of San Miguel and its mission.

The following is an excerpt from the speech given by San Miguel eighth-grader, Cristian 'Star' Goris, at the event:

"...When I was in fifth grade, I was very quiet and wouldn't talk to anyone. Then one day our Dean of Students sent me to her office. I thought I was in trouble, but I was wrong. She only wanted to ask me why I was so quiet and didn't talk a lot like the rest of my classmates. Then she told me that I shouldn't be shadow, I should be a star. Now my nickname at school is 'Star' and everyone calls me that all the time.

...Now I'm in the eighth grade, and I'm looking forward to going to a good high school. San Miguel really changed me because if I hadn't come to this school, I would still be very quiet and I wouldn't have the confidence to talk to anyone in a public setting like this. I am very glad that I got the chance to come to San Miguel because I know how many kids would like to be in my spot. But because I got this great chance, I now can face the future with the confidence and certainty that comes along with the feeling that I have truly become a 'Star.'"
